A proudly KZN book, celebrating local produce, farmers, cooks and chefs from the Midlands and the Berg, has scooped a top honour in the 2013 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
East Coast Tables, The Inland Edition, by writer Erica Platter and photographer Clinton Friedman, is the South African winner for the Best African Cuisine cookbook of the year. It now goes forward to compete against winners from other countries for the World Cuisine (Africa) title.
“We are thrilled that KZN’s multi-cultural culinary heritage, our food heroes and our brilliant produce have again been recognised,” said author Erica Platter. “African cuisine is a melting pot of a multitude of traditional dishes and influences, and that is what the recipes in East Coast Tables reflect.
Dargle was well represented in the book, with recipes including eggs, greens, trout and duck, and delightful stories about the people who live here and the food they produce and eat with love.
“An authentic portrayal of local food, life and culture,” says East Coast Radio GM Trish Taylor, who broke new ground for a radio station in South Africa by publishing these books. Erica concludes: “Please share this great news of YOUR book far and wide as we are still battling to convince the rest of the country that we really do COOK here in KZN!”
